Piet Noordijk overleden
In zijn woonplaats Hellevoetsluis is gisteren op 79-jarige leeftijd saxofonist Piet Noordijk na een kort ziekbed overleden.
Dat heeft zijn partner vandaag gemeld.
Noordijk was een belangrijk pleitbezorger van de naoorlogse bebop in Nederland. Zijn spel werd voor een belangrijk deel beïnvloed door Charlie Parker. Hij volgde na de Tweede Wereldoorlog een opleiding tot klarinettist aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium. Maar daarna ontdekte hij de saxofoon en specialiseerde zich in het bespelen hiervan.
De muzikant speelde vanaf de jaren zestig met uiteenlopende orkesten en big bands, waaronder The Skymasters, The Ramblers en Malando. Tussen 1978 en 1992 was Noordijk de vaste altsaxofonist van het Metropole Orkest. Hij musiceerde tijdens zijn lange carrière met tal van grote namen uit de jazzwereld, waaronder Pim Jacobs en Rita Reys, Nina Simone, Dexter Gordon en Toots Thielemans.
Noordijk won in zijn leven diverse prijzen, waaronder de Wessel Ilcken Prijs (voor zijn grote verdiensten voor de jazzmuziek), een Bird Award (die wordt uitgereikt tijdens het North Sea Jazz Festival) en een aantal jaar geleden een Edison en een Blijvend Applaus Prijs voor zijn gehele oeuvre. Ook werd de muzikant in 1997 benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw.
De saxofonist trad nog regelmatig op. Noordijk bereidde volgens zijn partner voordat hij ziek werd een aantal concerten voor ter gelegenheid van zijn tachtigste verjaardag, die hij volgend jaar hoopte te vieren.
De muzikant wordt vrijdag in Hellevoetsluis begraven.
